  1. 1970: Foundation

    Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Seitzer follows the call for a new chair at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg. The chair for technical electronics is founded.

  2. 1980: Development of MP3

    Basic research in psychoacoustics and coding lead to the development of MP3.

  3. 1984: Center for Microelectronics and Information Technology

    Prof. Dieter Seitzer founds the Center for Microelectronics and Information Technology GmbH, which is integrated into the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as a working group in 1985.

  4. 1990: Prof. Dieter Seitzer takes over the leadership of IIS

    Prof. Dieter Seitzer becomes head of the newly founded Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS).

  5. 1998: Emeritus of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Seitzer

    Provisional management of the chair by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Friedrich Oehme

  6. July 2002: new head of institute

    Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. habil. Robert Weigel takes over the chair leadership.

  9. 2009: 13. edition of the “Tietze/Schenk”

    The 13th edition of “Tietze/Schenk” is published as a 40th anniversary edition.

  10. 2009: Spin-off eesy-id

    Spin-off of the eesy-id company from the chair

  11. 2010: Retirement of PD Dr.-Ing Ulrich Tietze

    PD Dr.-Ing Ulrich Tietze retires (scientific employee since September 1972).

    PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Alexander Kölpin habilitates and continues working as a private lecturer at LTE.

  17. 2018: LTE @Tennenlohe

    Temporary relocation of the chair to Wetterkreuz 15, Tennenlohe

  18. 2019: LTE @Techfak

    Relocation of the chair from Tennenlohe to Cauerstr. 9

  19. 2020: 50 years LTE

    The institute for electronics engineering celebrates its 50th anniversary.

  20. 2021: Foundation of the Chair of Electrical Smart City Systems (ESCS)

    The institute of Electrical Smart City Systems (ESCS) is founded at FAU and Prof. Dr. Norman Franchi is appointed as the first chair. A small team wins many large projects for the newly founded institute within the 6G initiative in Germany and Europe.

  21. 2024: Establishment of LITES

    The Institute for Technical Electronics (LTE) and the Institute of Electrical Smart City Systems (ESCS) will be merged to form the Chair of Smart Electronics and Systems.
