This question was the focus of a FAUinsight event, where Norman Franchi and Felix Winter—moderated by Eva Russwurm—brought together two perspectives on a shared problem.

Communication Networks as an Invisible Foundation

Communication networks are not just one of many critical infrastructures—they are the foundation for all the others. If the backbone fails, there is a risk of cascading effects extending far beyond the original point of failure. In this context, resilience means more than just reliability: a resilient system is robust, capable of learning, and adaptive. AI-powered anomaly detection, intelligent early-warning systems, and self-healing network architectures are the key levers—as illustrated by the example of a networked intensive care unit, where a single switch failure can cost not just data packets, but crucial seconds in patient care.

Digitalization as an Opportunity—and a New Vulnerability

Felix Winter of Medical Valley EMN highlighted the healthcare perspective: Connected medical devices and telemedicine save lives—but they also create new dependencies. Resilience must be factored in from the very beginning, not added as an afterthought. Networks like the Medical Valley EMN bring together the necessary stakeholders to achieve this.

Trust as a Social Dimension

What both presentations had in common was this: Resilient infrastructures are the foundation of the trust that people place in a connected society. The future belongs to smart networks that not only connect but also think for themselves.

When Networks Take Center Stage: How Networked Systems Secure Critical Infrastructure What happens if it’s not the home Wi-Fi router that fails, but rather the communications infrastructure that hospitals, energy providers, and emergency services rely on?
